Travelers' Intercom

I saw the collection of letters under the heading “Rating Foreign Tour Companies That Customize Tours” (Aug. ’14, pg. 42). As a tour operator here in the US doing customized tours to China and Tibet for the past 25 years, I wanted to provide my perspective and some insight for travelers considering planning private tours with foreign firms rather than those based in the US.

I have traveled to China and Tibet over 55 times since 1989, working with local suppliers and hotels and seeing...

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the article “Impressed with the Quaint Italian Town of Arezzo” (July ’14, pg. 16), Margo Wilson’s recollection of her visit to Arezzo with her husband. It reminded me of a visit I took with my wife and friends in September 2009. We rented a car in Rome and drove to, first, Orvieto (worth a visit) and then Arezzo on our way to Lucca.

Fortunately, the Wilsons arrived in Arezzo by train. I drove to a convenient parking lot in the center of town, paid the...

While traveling in Spain with my husband and son in May 2014, we received a speeding ticket, but we didn’t even know we had been cited until at least two weeks later when the rental car company forwarded the ticket to us by email (charging us over €30 for this “service”). The ticket, a fine of €300 (near $403), had been given electronically.

We received the ticket on May 28 while on the highway heading from San Sebastián, Spain, to Biarritz, France, shortly before the border crossing...

Many people say they’ve been around the world, but it may have taken them 30 years to do it. I’ve been making a ’round-the-world (RTW) trip almost yearly for decades.

Due to a broken leg suffered in 2009 in Holland, I couldn’t finish my trip that year, and I didn’t do it in 1982 due to a death in the family, but I’ve taken a RTW trip most other years, touring Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, Asia… .

Special around-the-world fares save money, and many people don’t know...

Why apply for the TSA Pre√TM (Pre-check) program, alone (May ’14, pg. 65)? For $15 more, you can also skip those long passport lines on reentry to the US.

The Global Entry program offers quick passport clearance with the help of automated kiosks. It includes TSA Pre√TM (allowing approved travelers expedited security screening for selected departures in US airports) plus eligibility for other expedited-entry programs: NEXUS (quicker entry on Canadian/American border crossings), SENTRI...

Pam Zent shared her problem regarding luggage-zipper repairs not being covered by Delta Air Lines (March ’14, pg. 26) and queried if there are airlines that accept the responsibility of repairing zippers they’ve damaged.

My husband and I flew round trip on American Airlines from Orlando to Montreal, Canada, via Miami in August 2012. On the outgoing flight, the zipper on our TourTrek (Austin, TX; 800/813-6897) Stratus Golf Travel Cover was broken.

We reported the damage to AA...

CORRECTION — Above the subscriber’s letter about a Trans-Siberian Railway trip and an excursion to Lake Baikal (Aug. ’14, pg. 73) in Russia, the photo described as having been taken in the “Cossacks Village” actually shows the Taltsy Museum of Wooden Architecture.

The open-air museum features authentic 17th- to 19th-century buildings transported there from other parts of Siberia.

I’ve visited it twice, on July 13, 2011, and July 15, 2013, and, from one of our journals, I know...

A sign in the window of a shop that was closed for Ascension Day in Brugge, Belgium. Photo: Anderson

My husband, Ernest, and I were in Brugge, Belgium, on May 29, 2014, which was Ascension Day in the city.

Brugge has celebrated the day with a parade since 1392. It is said to be a reenactment of the Passion and Resurrection of Christ. The town essentially closes, bleachers are erected in a main square, rented chairs line the streets and the town heaves with tourists.

Purportedly, a bit of Christ’s blood is kept in a special container in a chapel next to City...
