Travelers' Intercom

Valparaíso, Chile, is a gorgeous walking town. Northwest of the capital city of Santiago, it’s a relaxing, less-than-two-hour bus ride away on any of the large, comfortable Pullman or Tur Bus coaches that leave every 15 minutes from the Alameda Bus Terminal (3850 Alameda Street; metro station Universidad de Santiago). In this short time, I was transported to one of the friendliest and most welcoming cities of Chile.

Valparaíso is a port town, and everywhere you look the influence of...

This is close to my heart.

I always travel with a big duffel bag filled with 20 to 30 books. Their weight is compensated for by the joy and learning they give.

During the year, I go to local Friends of the Library book sales and buy children’s books, primarily those for beginning readers — ABCs picture books, etc.

In non-English-speaking countries, the maids, guides and others I meet are thrilled to receive them. I’ve had them see the books in my room and ask even before...

My grandmother instilled in me a general love of travel, a curiosity about how people different from my New England people lived.

At the age of 58, she motored in her Willys from Connecticut to Mexico City to visit her perpetual-student son. Four times she did this, from 1948 to 1952, always driving alone (before there were interstates).

Gramma always returned with wonderful stories of the people she met along the way, especially once she was into Mexico. She would stop at...

My wife, Jane, and I took a tour of Taiwan in May 2013 with Edison Travel Service (4F No. 190, Song Jiang Road, Taipei, Taiwan; phone +886 2 2563 5313, fax 2563 4803, www.edison.com.tw). We booked it six months in advance. Carol Hsu responded promptly to all of my information requests.

The price of the 5-day excursion was $530 per person, which we felt was an outstanding price for the value. We stayed in 5-star hotels, all of which had swimming pools, spacious rooms and ample...

Although experiencing other cultures throughout the world is a priority, the people I meet in my travels are just as important, and Rita Martins was outstanding as our tour director on a tour of Portugal in September 2013 with Globus (Littleton, CO; 866/755-8581).

I was part of a group of 44 people, all of whom were very pleasant and contributed to the enjoyment of my vacation.

The cost of the 10-night tour, with airfare from New York via Madrid, one pre-tour night in...

I was asked to follow up on a comment I made in my letter titled “Explore UNESCO Sites” (May ’14, pg. 12).

I had referred to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list and wrote, “While the list is certainly not perfect and has left me wondering, on a few occasions, why a particular site was included, it has often led me to sites I never would have considered or found had I not consulted it.” I was asked to name some of the World Heritage Site listings that left me scratching my head....

When I plan a trip to a new destination, I always like to read books about the place before, during or after my travels.

I recently took a trip to Turkey with Overseas Adventure Travel (Cambridge, MA; 800/955-1925). Our guide recommended that we read, prior to our departure, “Birds Without Wings” by Louis de Bernières (2004, Knopf). It was a great suggestion and certainly enriched my understanding of Turkish history.

When people are going to India, I always suggest they read “A...

We took a 3½-week trip to northern Vietnam and Indonesia, April 3-28, 2014. The tour was with Overseas Adventure Travel (Cambridge, MA; 800/955-1925), which did a very good job and which we’re happy to recommend.

Our hotel experience, however, brought to mind a persistent question we’ve had for many years. Why is it that hotels offer space for only one suitcase in each room?

Wherever we’ve been, in the US and abroad, each hotel room offered one luggage rack and/or flat space...
