My wife, Ginny, and I have traveled throughout Europe via Grand Circle Travel (Boston, MA; 800/221-2610). The Grand Circle Foundation funds, in part, many programs around the world, including a number involving upgraded educational opportunities for children, especially in the younger grades. As a longtime coin collector, I’ve used the 50 State Quarters® Program coin series for a wonderful impact on these children.

I select state coins with special images that would appeal: New York’...

Goree Island, Senegal

On a January-February tour of Senegal and The Gambia several years ago, my wife and I visited Goree Island, Senegal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The island was once the point of contact for ships doing European and Caribbean trade. At the House of Slaves, they were eager to tell the story of the slave trade and show some of the quarters where slaves were held prior to being transported on ships to the New World. A place where much artwork is shown, the island was colorful.

An ancient Lycian rock sarcophagus

While traveling solo in Turkey for 26 days in May ’09, I was in Olympos and wanted to visit the town of Kas (pronounced Kash). I waited near a small store at the top of a dirt road and took the first bus that had an open seat. The ride took three hours. In Kas, I got a room at the Ani Hotel (Recep Bilgin Caddesi No:12, Kas; phone 90 242 836 1791) for TRY25 (near $11) per night, including breakfast and free WiFi. The room was very nice, airy and bright, with facilities en suite. ...

Paris is still our favorite city, and my wife, Josie, and I still manage to find new things to see. One that surprised us in September ‘13 was how many people were riding those little, 2-wheeled, foot-powered scooters called Razors.  Adults, too!

The scooters are small and lightweight enough to carry on and off the Métro, and they’re easy to stow away in small apartments.

This trip, we did a few things that we hadn’t taken the time to do before.

• We went to the top of...

Moai in the quarry Rano Raraku.

Easter Island, or Rapa Nui, is so remote that it is not “on the way” to anywhere else, which is why it took me over 30 years to finally get there. Prior to a tour of South America, I visited Oct. 24-28, 2012, reserving a hotel online and booking tours upon arrival.

Situated in the southeastern Pacific over 2,000 miles off the coast of Chile, it is a small, triangular-shaped island with a main town of over 3,000 residents and an airport with a very long runway built by NASA...

Turkmenistan was one of the “five ’Stans” that I visited on a group tour of Central Asia, Oct. 4-27, 2013. If you are planning to travel there, you may wish to take note of my experiences.

We were given advance notice that the tour director scheduled for our trip had had his Turkmenistan visa denied and that we would have a different tour director, Elena, in that, our final country before returning to the States. We also learned that another person in the group had...

I’ve traveled to many countries on several different airlines, always using the same Samsonite roller bag. It held up very well. However, when my husband, Mike, and I returned to Seattle after checking it through from Budapest via Amsterdam on a Delta flight on Sept. 13, 2013, we were surprised to see my suitcase appear on the baggage carousel wrapped in tape.

The outside zipper had been completely broken off, and the pull on the main zipper was gone. The name tag had been torn from...

My husband, Jim, and I had been thinking of visiting Southern Africa for many years. When we read the Feature Article by George Anderson, “Spending 20 Fantastic Days in Southern Africa” (Feb. ’13, pg. 46), we knew we had found our trip. We immediately emailed Pierre Duval, who, along with his wife, Karen, own and operate BushBaby Safaris (110 Victoria St., Dundee, KwaZulu-Natal, 3000, South Africa; phone +27 [0] 34 212 3216).

Both Pierre and Karen were very helpful in answering our...
