Travelers' Intercom

For about a year, my wife, Louise, communicated with Thomas Hollowell and Fazia Farrook of Journey Beyond Travel (Avenue Lalla Amina, Residence Afifa, Apt. 1, Hay Riad, Ifrane 53000, Morocco; phone, toll-free from the US, 855/687-6676 or, worldwide, 765/387-4404).

From multiple tour offerings, we selected Journey Beyond’s “Eclectic Tour” and, with their considerable help, a Morocco adventure was shaped that stretches my imagination to describe.

We were caught up in the idea of...

After a stay in Munich for Oktoberfest, my husband, Steve, and I visited Bulgaria, Oct. 1-4, 2013, which is not just a country to check off your list. It has a lot to offer.

We retained the services of Patrick Peneff as our guide, a decision we made based on a Mart ad and some reviews we had seen in ITN (including Jan. ’13, pg. 32 & July ’12, pg. 30).

After I emailed Patrick in March 2013, he responded immediately and then called me. He offered several options and price...

Romania’s many faces were readily accessible and wonderful to see during our 2-week visit, Sept. 2-16, 2013. The cost of the trip was €4,800 (near $6,520), which included accommodations, breakfasts, all driving and guiding, airport/hotel transfers and all museum admission fees.

We booked our trip through Medieval Tours (Piata Romana 9, scara C, ap. 34, sector 1, Bucharest, Romania; phone 0040 21 326 62 68) six months in advance, in order to work out our itinerary, but that may not...

I had the most wonderful experience in May ’13 traveling in Bavaria, Germany, with Mr. Ernst Gartner (Eisvogelweg 35, 81827 München, Germany; phone +49 176 23898956 or email saseg-reisen@gmx.de). I had seen his classified ad in ITN’s Mart section.

Because I have mobility problems, I hired a guide. I contacted Mr. Gartner about 45 days before my trip and arranged to be picked up in Gunzenhausen, a small town in Bavaria. I paid him $200 for about six hours of his guide services.

I traveled to Copán, Honduras, in October ’13 to visit the Copán Ruins, and I can highly recommend the hotel I stayed at, Hotel Marina Copán (Copán Ruinas, Honduras, C.A.; phone [504] 2651 4070, fax 2651 4477).

It was built in 1945 and has maintained its colonial architecture throughout. The 49 rooms are positioned along a maze of corridors, with a central pool area and lush gardens. Hotel amenities include a restaurant, bar, gift shop, pool, hot tub and free WiFi access.

Pine trees hug the beaches along the Adriatic coast. This was the view from our hotel balcony in Makarska. Photo: Josip Palic´

After viewing HGTV’s “House Hunters International” episode about the Croatian city of Makarska, a delightful resort located south of Split and north of Dubrovnik, my husband, Josip, and I were lured there in August 2013.

At www.booking.com we found a gem of a hotel, the modern-chic Hotel Milenij (Put Cvitacˇke 4a, 21300 Makarska, Hrvatska, Croatia; phone +385 [0] 21 619 540 or fax 615 074), and off we went for a relaxing week on the Adriatic coast.

This is in response to the request for lodging information from those of us who travel “on a shoestring.”

I traveled independently in Turkey in May of 2012. I left my wheeled suitcase at the Coşkun Pension in Istanbul and traveled for three weeks with only a backpack.

The transportation was delightfully simple. I took dolmuses (minibuses) for cheap regional travel, two 5-hour coach rides and two in-country flights on Turkish Airlines.

I was 85 when I took this trip, and...

Decorated cows at the Almabtrieb in Russbach, Austria. Photo: Bitman

My wife, Rosalie, and I were fortunate to be staying near Russbach, Austria, Oct. 4-6, 2013, during the Almabtrieb, a ceremonial cattle drive marking the end of summer.

In summer, the cattle are sent to the high Alpine pastures to graze, and at the end of summer they’re brought down by herdsmen and returned to their owners. The cows are crowned with brightly colored headdresses, ribbons and flowers.

Thousands of people attended the 3-day festival. Arts and craft stalls...
