Travelers' Intercom

For part of a trip to Southeast Asia, our travel agent arranged for my wife, Pnina, and me to have, in Cambodia, an independent tour guide: Sopheap Bung (16D, St. 2003, Phum Chamka Ouloeuk, Sangkat Kakap, Khan Pau Senchey, Phnom Penh, Cambodia; phone 85512894155 or 855978828155 or email bpheap@hotmail.com or bpheap@yahoo.com).

Every day of our visit, Jan. 18-22, 2013, Sopheap arrived with an air-conditioned car, with driver, at about 8 a.m. and returned us to the hotel between 4 and 6...

My wife and I took a wonderful trip to Bologna and environs, May 8-19, 2013. We have hiked in the Dolomites, driven in Tuscany, gone with small groups and traveled on our own in Italy, but when we wanted to visit Bologna I was unable to find a tour that I liked that concentrated on just that city.

I turned to a travel agent whom we have used several times, Rebecca Falkenberry (rebeccaf@brownelltravel.com), an independent agent for Brownell Travel. She has been phenomenal, not only...

It’s always nice to receive the kind of warm attention upon arrival that I did, as a solo traveler, at the Priestville Guest House (10 Priestfield Rd., Edinburgh, Scotland, EH16 5HJ, U.K.; phone 0131 667 2435). For my stay, April 1-10, 2013, proprietors Colin and his wife, Trina, greeted me in their beautiful lobby area.

As requested, I was given a double room with en suite facilities. It was not only spacious but extremely clean, serviced every day. My daily rate, with...

My wife and I and seven friends traveled to Panama City, June 16-25, 2012, to do some volunteer work in the local area of Curundú.

During this trip, we stayed at the Panama Vacation Quarters (No. 26 Amelia Denis de Caza, Quarry Heights, Ancon/Balboa, Panama, Republica de Panama; phone [not for reservations] 011 507 314 1845 or, in the US, 800/633-4643 or 915/581-9388).

It’s located on Ancon Hill, a beautiful area higher up in the lush tropical forests, from where one can see...

I read the subscriber’s letter “Did Not Find Expected Amenities on Easter Island” (June ’13, pg. 24) and can sympathize with the writer’s experience, as most of us who are world travelers (125 countries so far, for me) have been disappointed when our expectations failed to meet with reality. However, on a tour I took to Rapa Nui, “The Atacama Desert & Easter Island: Different Worlds,” operated by Road Scholar (Boston, MA; 800/454-5768), I had just the opposite experience.

The 20-...

My father emigrated from Albania 100 years ago and, although my family kept no ties to the homeland, my wife, Anne, and I had been thinking about going there for years. After reading Carol Probst’s article “Albania — Enjoying Europe Without the Cost and Crowds” (Dec. ’12, pg. 36), we got in touch with the guide she recommended, Enea Kumi.

Enea, from Albania TravelNet (Galleria Trading Center, Barrikada str., Tirane 1001, Albania; phone +355 42247518...

As a longtime philatelist, I choose many of my travel destinations based on my fascination with the postage stamps from those places. Postage-stamp-size Andorra finally bubbled up to the top of my priority list.

The trip to Andorra my wife, Carol, and I took in June ’13 was a delight worth sharing. Despite Andorra’s remoteness, getting there was easy. Novatel Andorra By Bus (Andorra la Vella, Andorra; phone +376 803 789, fax +376 867 884) operates buses between the...

I read the letters from people who had traveled to countries, listened to music and later sought that music out (Aug. ’13, pg. 56). As someone who received her degree in ethnomusicology, I have a few suggestions that might help travelers find recordings of the music they’re seeking.

If you know the name of the act (person or group), check to see if they may have something on YouTube.com. So many performers these days utilize this platform to promote their music.

Sometimes,...
