Travelers' Intercom

I have been traveling the world for over 50 years for business and pleasure. In Italy I’ve experienced the energy and spectacle of Milan and Venice and the serenity of Lake Garda and have stayed in a quaint hotel inside the medieval walled town of Montagnana. But in June ’13, attending a meeting, I had my first opportunity to explore the area around Bergamo.

The evening of my arrival, my host invited a small group for pizza at a restaurant in what is called the “upper city” of...

My wife, Anna, and I visited Aruba, one of the four constituent countries that comprise the Kingdom of the Netherlands, July 18-24, 2012.

The weather was quite warm, but we didn’t notice it much because of the 25- to 40-mph trade winds blowing constantly.

We spent the majority of our time at two resorts and stayed two nights in the capital, Oranjestad. Oranjestad seemed rather seedy to us.

What was most striking about Aruba was how warm and happy the people were whom...

Verona, Italy — For €2-€3 each, visitors can climb to the top of the 84-meter-high Torre dei Lamberti on foot or by elevator. (I’d recommend spending the extra euro to do the latter.) Located off Piazza Erbe, the tower offers an incredible 360-degree view over Verona, a portion of which is seen above.

I had read that Ghent, Belgium, is small enough to walk on your own and that its Tourist Information office has a printed walking tour. Tucked back behind a big gate and not well marked, the office was difficult for my husband, Ed, and me to find on a visit in May ’12.

In the city center, the streets to the south of the Korenmarkt (Corn Market) are straight and wide, with elegant mansions of the French-speaking aristocracy. The streets to the north are narrow and winding, with low...

For our friends Tom and Gretchen and my husband, Jerry, and me, I wanted to hire a private guide in Argentina, but that was cost prohibitive. To design a trip for four of us for October ’12. I ended up contacting Anibal Mazas of Merlin Viajes (Pdte. Roque Sáenz Peña 1119 9° “902”, Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires, CP 1035, Argentina; phone +54 9 11 4936-0313).

I contacted him on the advice of Claudine Van Hemelryk of B&B Olleros 3000* in Buenos Aires, where we stayed four nights (...

A subscriber wrote about the pleasant surprise she got when her Kindle, left on a train in Switzerland, was found by other US travelers (April ’13, pg. 55).

My suggestion? Always put your name, business address (not residence) and a phone number on your electronic equipment and cameras so that if they get left behind in a hotel, a lounge on a cruise ship, etc., your odds of getting your equipment returned will increase dramatically.

From experience, I know it works.

I lived in Madrid and Zaragoza for seven years in the ’60s and ’70s, and in 2010 I traveled in Spain for six weeks from mid September through October. On that trip I spent some time independently and did a sightseeing tour with Explore! and a hiking tour with Exodus, both booked through Adventure Center (Emeryville, CA; 800/843-4272) and both great, actually!

I’m familiar with Spain, and I’m writing to let ITN readers know about a chain of super-...

A polar bear

I had always dreamed of taking a trip above the Arctic Circle. My chance to visit came in June 2011. On the second day on board the ship, someone spotted a creamy lump on the white snow. The captain slowly maneuvered the ship for a closer look and I spotted my first polar bear! It was about 11 p.m., but, in this land of the midnight sun, it was still light out. This picture was taken from the ship’s deck.
