After my wife, Paula, and I and another couple traveled in Turkey in September ’11, I compiled information and tips on some topics that weren’t addressed or I felt weren’t emphasized enough in the guidebooks and Internet resources we consulted prior to our trip. I also have some recommendations.

FOOD AND DRINK — We ate healthier meals on this trip than on any other trip we’d taken! Fresh vegetables, salads and fruits were abundant and delicious. The fish...

My wonderful Italian cousins are always finding different day trips for us to enjoy when I visit them. On a trip to Italy in August ’12, we visited two very different places.

One was Anzio, site of the famous WWII battle about 56 miles southwest of Rome. From Stazione Termini in Rome, the train ride took about an hour.

Right outside the Anzio train station was a beautiful fountain of Neptune. Surrounded by palm trees, I found it difficult to imagine this beautiful, serene...

My husband, Gerald, and I took a 2-week humanitarian trip to Morocco with Friendship Force International (Atlanta, GA; 404/522-9490). The “Morocco Cultural Tour,” March 24-April 6, 2013, was organized by Experience It Tours (Springfield Center, NY; 315/858-3426).

The land cost was $2,395, which included 10 nights in hotels, two home-hosted nights and one night in the Berber Cultural Center. Among other activities, we visited a women’s co-op and a school for the deaf.

This trip...

I wanted to tour the Italian islands of Sardinia and Corsica, and the only appealing itinerary I found that included both was offered by Saga (Enbrook Park, Folkestone, Kent, CT20 3SE, U.K.; phone +44 [0] 1303 771190. Note: US residents cannot book online; they must book via phone or email).

The price for my 13-day tour, June 6-18, 2012, was £1,499 (near $2,278), which included round-trip air from London Stansted Airport to Cagliari, Sardinia. The single supplement was £229 ($348),...

Cuba, just an hour’s flight from Miami yet so foreign! When my husband, Jerry, and I received an email from Mark Grantham, owner of Galapagos Travel (Aptos, CA; 800/969-9014), announcing a trip to Cuba, we were interested.

We had gone on a number of successful trips with Galapagos Travel: to the Galápagos (June ’04, pg. 66), Antarctica (Jan.’08, pg. 72), Madagascar (Nov.’10, pg, 6) and Chile and Easter Island (May ’11, pg. 65). We trust that their trips...

My wife, Berdine, and I took an independent trip to Peru, Feb. 21-March 3, 2013. We flew on LAN, nine hours nonstop from San Francisco to Lima on a Boeing 767. Business class had flat beds.

We felt safe everywhere in Peru. Lima, a city of about 11 million, was a real surprise. While it has its share of poverty, it was much more prosperous than we had imagined, with good hotels, great scenery (especially in the Miraflores beach area) and wonderful restaurants. Traffic could be very...

For our stay in Bangkok, Thailand, during an independent trip to Southeast Asia, my husband, Earl, and I followed the recommendation of an ITN reader (“Woman Driver in Bangkok,” April ’12, pg. 32) and contacted Rat of Rat Service (phone [66] 08 9108 2170, email rat_bkk@yahoo.com).

Rat now owns a B&B (747/3 Soi Sudprasert 8, Chareun Rat 8 Rd., Bangkok 10120; phone 02 675 2170 or the Rat Service number), where we stayed Nov. 22-26, 2012. We paid THB1,200 (near $40) per night for...

Looking for a guide in Cape Town for our May ’12 trip to South Africa, my wife, Jane, and I saw that Denise Dick (denised@yebo.co.za) was recommended by ITN readers as a very competent guide (April ’04, pg. 92 & April ’10, pg. 14).

Denise lives in Hout Bay with her husband, who teaches sailing. She is a perfect guide for someone who goes to South Africa on a formal tour but wants to experience the area “one on one” without other tourists.

In two days with Denise, we were...
