Prior to our trip to Romania in April ’07, we had read many bad things about the taxi drivers in Bucharest, so we had the hotel send a taxi to the airport for us since we would be arriving at 12:30 a.m. on British Air.

The hotel did that, but it was not a good idea as the flight was over an hour late; instead of its costing $20, it cost us $50 because the driver had waited for the flight.

Plus we had to use American currency because the driver spoke no English and did not...

During a visit to Paris, my wife and I used the Métro to travel around. One time we were going down the stairs, staying close to the wall and the handrail, when all of a sudden three fellows came in directly behind me.

My wife yelled, “Jack! Wallet!”

I quickly turned around, and the three fellows moved to the center of the stairs and rushed down and soon were out of sight. I then realized I would have been the victim of a pickpocket except for the quick action of my wife.

From approximately AD 600 to 1200, step wells were built throughout India, especially in the drier western part of the subcontinent. A step well makes it easier for people to reach the water in a location as well as to maintain the well itself. Great spots to escape from the heat, step wells often became gathering places.

Some of these wells, such as the one pictured here, Chand Baori in Abhaneri, Rajasthan, include architectural features such as temples. WANDA BAHDE of Summerfield,...

From a visit in early October ’08, I believe I have finally found the best way to get to Paris and back from the confusing Charles de Gaulle International Airport arrivals/departures “terminals.”

By all means, avoid the buses and the still-inconvenient Roissy Rail connection and use Airport Van (103 rue Villiers de l’Isle Adam, 75020 Paris, France; phone +33 0 153 39 1818, fax 39 1313, www.airportvan.com).

At last, a prompt and reliable service that operates 21 vans in and out...

My wife, Jane, and I traveled to Copenhagen for the first time in 2006. We went to the town square to find a sightseeing bus and boarded one which had “Hop On-Hop Off” prominently displayed on the side. We rode for two or three stops and then hopped off at a palace that had been made into a museum.

After visiting the museum, we returned to the bus stop and within five minutes another bus appeared. We hopped on and went to see the Little Mermaid for the photo op. Another bus picked us...

Taking advantage of some frequent-flyer miles on United Airlines, I decided to travel to Spain on my own, May 10-27, 2008. It had been 10 years since my late husband and I had been in Spain, and I wanted to revisit the south.

Although I have Spanish friends near Madrid, I decided to join the hospitality organization SERVAS (US SERVAS, Inc., 1125 16th St., Ste. 201, Arcata, CA 95521-5585; 707/825-1714, www.usservas.org) in order to meet new people and have some personal contacts during...

My husband, Leon, and I went to Rome for five days and then on a Mediterranean cruise for two weeks in October ’08. Leon uses a wheelchair, though he can walk a bit when he needs to.

• In Rome we stayed at the Migdal Palace Hotel (Corso Vittorio Emanuele II n. 173, 00186 Rome, Italy; phone +39 06 68890091, fax 68892327, www.migdalpalace.it), which is a real find in central Rome.

It is within walking distance of the Vatican, the Forum, the Trevi Fountain and the Jewish Quarter....

White Island, in the Bay of Plenty 30 miles off the coast of Whakatane on New Zealand’s North Island, is an active volcanic site. On a December ’07-January ’08 tour, my wife, Eva, and I arranged for a helicopter tour to the island with White Island Volcano Adventure (Box 10, Waimana, Whakatane, North Island, NZ; phone/fax +64 7 308 4188 or, toll free in NZ, phone 0800 804 354, www.vulcanheli.co.nz).

This is a “must see”! You walk about, and the scenery and colors are fantastic.
