In late April, at the end of our 2017 sakura (cherry blossom) trip to Japan, we were still looking for flowering trees even after six weeks of viewing and photographing cherry blossoms.

We headed to the Fuji Matsuri, or Wisteria Festival (fuji = wisteria), at Kameido Tenjin Shrine, a 15-minute walk from Kameido Station on the So¯bu Line in Tokyo.

The wisteria vines there are supposed to bloom from the middle of April to the first week in May. When we visited on...

What a fabulous place Chiang Rai is! It’s located in the Golden Triangle area of Thailand, where three rivers come together creating boundaries for Laos, Myanmar and Thailand.

It’s a great place for a cheap vacation. On our visit, April 11-May 5, 2017, my daughter, Stacy, and I found everything there low-cost. Lunch was 75 cents. Dinner at a place on the river, including beverages, cost $10.

We stayed in town, even though “10-star” hotels at...

Around May 2016, when I was searching on Kayak.com for flights to Guadalajara, Mexico, the Mexican airline Volaris (www.volaris.com) always showed up as having the cheapest fares. When I looked at its Yelp.com rating, it was a dismal 1.5 stars. Despite all the negative reviews, I had a budget to meet (under $1,000 for a 10-day trip), so I booked tickets. The outgoing flight was delayed by more than three hours. I was forgiving because, at least, we were given a sandwich, a drink and a...

We just read the subscriber’s letter “Critique of ’Stans & South Caucasus tours” (July ’17, pg. 24). We were not on that subscriber’s tour, so we have no personal knowledge of her experience, but for those considering traveling with JMG Tibet Tours, or JMG Tours (Lauderhill, FL; 866/548-4238, www.jmgtibettours.com), we’d like to give our impression of the JMG “Five Stans Tour” that we took April 8-May 8, 2017.The trip began with the...

If your travels ever take you to Romania and/or Bulgaria, I’d like to recommend a tour company there whose owners developed a wonderful 3½-week journey for my companion and me, Oct. 13-Nov. 3, 2016.

After an extensive Internet search, I found Balkan Trails (29 Mihail Sebastian St., Bldg. S7, Ent. A, Apt. 37, Sector 5, Bucharest 050784, Romania; phone +40 723 578 452, www.balkantrails.com), run by Vlad Trestian, a Romanian, and his wife, Zoe, a Bulgarian. Both Vlad and Zoe...

We took our third tour with George Nevin, owner and operator of Intimate France (Oakland, CA; 800/676-1247, www.intimatefrance.com), Sept. 6-18, 2015, this time to the Dordogne area of France. Rather than cover that beautiful area, in this review we will focus on what a guest on one of George’s four tours a year can expect. We believe that Intimate France offers high-quality tours with outstanding value received for dollars spent. Expect courtesy, consideration and a genuine desire to...

For the visit to our 105th destination (as defined by the Travelers’ Century Club’s list of countries and territories at www.travelerscenturyclub.org), we were seeking a cheap foreign trip that required less than an 8-hour plane ride. Coincidentally, Travelzoo.com was promoting an air-inclusive deal from Azores Getaways (Estrada de São Gonçalos, 235, 9500-343 Ponta Delgada, Azores, Portugal; phone, in the US, 617/934-8474, azores getaways.com/en).

The deal was very...

In the 1980s I did a whirlwind trip to Agra, India, while attending a conference in New Delhi. The first morning, I ventured out of my hotel to hire a pedicab to take me to the Taj Mahal. I approached the pedicab at the front of the line and asked how much it would cost to drive me around for the day. His answer was, “You pay me what you want.” So we set off for the day and returned in late afternoon. His English was quite good, and we had fun as well.I was thinking I...
