Aigas Field Centre, in Beauly, Scotland, is the home of conservationist and nature writer Sir John Lister-Kaye and his wife, Lady Lucy, who warmly welcome guests for either bespoke holidays or preset week-long group holidays covering themes such as bird-watching, mammals, history, mushrooms, hiking, etc.

The center is dedicated to restorative ecology. Woods with indigenous trees have been established, and there is a lovely loch on the premises plus various trails for exploration....

In May and June of this year, my wife and I spent four nights in London, took the Eurostar (business class) to Paris, spent four nights there and then took off in our rental car (with GPS) for 14 nights in eastern France, Switzerland, the French Alps, Lake Annecy, Beaune, Dijon, etc.We shared the driving, stayed at 3- and 4-star hotels, ate at nice restaurants, saw London shows and a Paris opera and visited large and small towns and quaint French villages. We did all of our own research...

For a tour of England and France that was to take place May 26-June 21, 2017, my wife and I purchased travel insurance with Travel Guard (800/826-1300, www.travelguard.com). We paid $428 for Travel Guard’s Gold Policy.

Four days prior to the departure of our tour with Rick Steves’ Europe (Edmonds, WA; 425/771-8303, www.ricksteves.com), my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer and we had to cancel.

Regarding the tickets for our flight from Portland, Oregon, to London...

My wife, Marguerite, and I had booked a 50-day cruise leaving in April 2017, and on the day the cruise was booked, Feb. 23, we purchased an insurance policy through Tin Leg (844/240-1233, www.tinleg.com) that included a preexisting-condition waiver. Unfortunately, Marguerite has AVN (avascular necrosis), and two weeks after purchasing the policy it progressed to the point where she had to seek medical assistance. She was informed that she should not travel, since that would only...

I wanted to add something to the information offered in “Thinking of Singapore” (Oct. ’17, pg. 53).The easiest way to get to the Singapore Botanic Gardens (and, yes, they’re definitely worth seeing) is to take the subway. It deposits you just a few steps from the entrance. I stayed at the Ibis (170 Bencoolen St.; phone +65 659 32 888, www.ibis.com), which is well located for walking to the colonial area and Chinatown and has easy access to the subway. Behind the...

My husband and I normally travel independently and are used to arranging our own accommodations, flights, itineraries, etc. For places to stay, I search various online sites, including ITN’s, and then, using websites, email addresses or fax numbers I’ve found, inquire about vacancies on the dates we expect to be there. While traveling in England and Wales in June 2016, we stayed in many bed-and-breakfasts, two of which were exceptional.• Immediately upon arriving at Tal Menai...

After discovering that my ATM cards would not work at automatic teller machines in Amsterdam, Netherlands, in 2013, I got a chip-and-PIN debit card from Andrews Federal Credit Union, or AFCU (www.andrewsfcu.org). It had been mentioned in ITN (March ’14, pg. 40) that these would work in Europe.* I also got a preloaded chip-and-PIN debit card from AFCU in 2016.

I visited Milan in 2015, 2016 and 2017. Though I had no problems using my debit cards in ATMs, I tried both debit cards...

Having traveled on several river cruises with both Viking and Uniworld, my wife and I were pleasantly surprised to discover that cruising the Iberian Peninsula’s Douro River was a nice change of pace.

If you’re considering a cruise on the Douro, here are some of the more unique aspects to expect. (This letter is based on pre-trip research, the experiences of friends who took Viking’s Douro River cruise in 2015, and our experiences on an August 2017 river cruise with...
