Among the top attractions for many visitors to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, are strolling along the colorful Malecón, exploring the town’s charming colonial center and basking in the beauty of the vast Banderas Bay and the lush, palm-covered mountains nearby.

Some people also check out places associated with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, who, in 1963, carried on a scandalous and highly publicized love affair during the filming of “The Night of the Iguana,” when...

I was lucky with my trip to Italy this year in that I had no major mishaps or missed connections on either planes or trains. However, in the stations, I still depended totally on others to help with my 22-inch suitcase, and someone always came through.

Once, faced with a long flight of steep stairs in getting from the lower level of the train station in Verona up to the designated platform, I stood there only a few seconds before a dark-haired child of about 10 saw my plight. Without...

Editor’s note: In last month’s issue, ITN printed letters from several subscribers who had strong reactions to the article about “ugly tourists” by Contributing Editor Rick Steves in his June 2017 column. Rick was invited to provide a response to be printed in conjunction with those letters, but he was not able to do so by press time. Rick has returned from his latest trip, and his response appears below.I want to thank ITN readers for the thoughtful responses to my...

I own a selfie stick and will never travel without it, and I have never taken a selfie. The selfie stick securely holds my iPhone 6 Plus, it has a wrist strap so I never drop the stick or phone, and it has one button on the handle that allows me to take photos with one hand.I no longer take photos with my fingers over the lens, and when leaning over a ledge or around a corner, I feel much more secure that I won’t be jostled and drop the phone. There are many different sticks, but I own...

I read the article about Singapore by Marvin and Carole Feldman (July ’17, pg. 34). It took me back some years ago to when I visited Singapore on discounted transportation as a courier. Because Marvin was retired military, they got free transport (“space available”) on US military aircraft, but I wouldn’t want to have been a retired soldier to get it!

Here are a few places the Feldmans neglected to see in Singapore or just didn’t write about, ones I think...

I was scheduled to fly on United Airlines from Dublin, Ireland, to Washington, DC, on June 16, 2017. After hours of delay, United canceled the flight for mechanical reasons. In addition to putting passengers up at an airport hotel and rescheduling their travel for the next day, United provided a sheet explaining our rights to compensation under European Union (EU) rules.* According to the sheet, I was entitled to €600 (near $700) in compensation, since United was not able to...

It seems as if everyone is going to Iceland this year! I returned on July 7, 2017, from an excellent visit there and wanted to pass along something I wish I had known when I was making my plans. Iceland by Bus (icelandbybus.is), which also sells point-to-point tickets, runs a nonguided Hop On And Off bus that circles the whole country and makes multiple stops. A Full Circle Bus Passport costs ISK37,900 (near $364) and is good for up to two months (either clockwise or counterclockwise...

Rick Steves gave some good, solid advice on driving in Europe (Aug. ’17, pg. 55), but he skipped over a few items that I consider very important, based on my 60 years of driving rented, leased and owned cars in 75 foreign countries, much of it in Europe.

• Many agencies will not rent to drivers over 70 or 75 years old, spoiling the fun before it starts, but I’ve found Hertz (www.hertz.com) to be consistently liberal about renting to older drivers.

•...
